Tecogen / Ilios Dynamics in Waltham, MA, needed a way to measure torque in a tight space during an engine endurance test. They are developing a new engine platform for Combined Heat and Power (CHP) which requires a 5000 hour endurance test. This engine is driving a generator and refri2geration compressor using a Gates synchronous timing belt.

In the test cell, the engine is side loaded via drive sheaves and a synchronous timing belt, so using a traditional torque meter in the shaft-to-shaft configuration was not feasible.

The challenge was the limited space available for the torque sensor, the small length of exposed shaft between the engine and the pulley. The TorqueTrak 10K was the perfect fit. The strain gage was installed on the shaft itself and the Transmitter and battery were mounted to the pulley. All three components rotated together, transmitting live torque data to the nearby Receiver.

The reason they used a belt drive is that it allows them to change drive ratios between the engine and generator/compressor. They are using the engine in a high efficiency water heater so depending upon desired water temperature for the customer site (i.e. 120, 140, 160, etc) they will install certain pulleys to allow the engine to run at wide open throttle (WOT) for maximum efficiency.

Engine efficiency, in this case, is calculated directly from fuel input and torque output. The engine efficiency results from this test matched those of an independent laboratory performing a comparable test.
This test was funded by the California Energy Commission (CEC).
